Yet another Syracuse University quarterback is sidelined , but — looking on the bright side — a shark expert came to the State University of New York of Environmental Science and Forestry on Thursday. See these and more highs and lows in Daily Orange news in this week’s Boos and Bravos. Click on the headings or orange text to read more.

Shark Expert

An international shark expert came to SUNY-ESF this Thursday and it was actually pretty cool. Dr. Peter Klimley brought his books and a set of shark jaws for students to pass around the room — a room that was packed during his 4 – 5 p.m. talk. Klimley has done most of his research on the nocturnal and migratory movements of these predatory animals and is working on developing reserves to protect them from overfishing.

The class is open to all people and aims to be a cultural experience, blending dance, exercise and song as a form of therapy. (Photo by Daniel Hinton)

Cultural dance on Westcott

Biboti Ouikahilo has brought a medley of cultures under one roof in Wacheva Cultural Arts. The dance studio, founded and directed by Ouikahilo, offers a wide variety of classes, including African dance and flamenco. Now tucked away on Westcott, Ouikahilo has traveled the world with the Ivory Coast National Dance Company and others but chose to settle down in Syracuse. This week, Wacheva performed in Setnor Auditorium, where students got the chance to learn more about the studio and connect to the world outside campus.

Field hockey star

Emma Russell made Syracuse history this weekend when she scored her 48th career goal, setting the all-time scoring record for the field hockey program. Russell, an Ireland native, said that she’s grown a lot since her freshman year and has found a family in her team, even though she didn’t think she would. Russell is also one of the team’s captains and has started in 68 out of her 73 games, in addition to making the SportCenter Top 10.

Low attendance

The attendance at the first three games of this football season has been meager, to say the least. On average, 10,00o less people have attended each of the games as compared to last year, and businesses have felt it. Steven Papazides, the manager of Acropolis Pizza  House, said that he’s handled less business this season than he is used to. He attributes it partially to the early kickoff times of many of the games, which will happen again this Saturday against Louisiana State University.

Sexist lyrics

Music columnist Isha Damle dove deeper into rapper Drake’s relationship with feminism this week. She pointed out that while Drake has talked about using less offensive lyrics, his efforts say otherwise.  Besides some select lines, many of his raps are still derogatory.

Quarterback injuries

Freshman QB Eric Dungey went out in the second half of the SU vs. Central Michigan game because of an injury and will not be ready in time for this weekend’s game against LSU. Dungey had taken the place of Terrel Hunt, who is sidelined for the rest of the season due to a torn Achilles. Zach Mahoney will now start against the No. 8 team in the country. He was fifth-string QB just a few weeks ago but feels he is ready for the challenge.
